Magic Reindeer Food

So where have I been living….under a rock? I had never heard of “Magic Reindeer Food” until Finley’s teacher sent him home from school with a baggie full. What is reindeer food, you may ask? Well, it’s an oatmeal/sugar mix that you sprinkle on your lawn on Christmas Eve. Apparently reindeer love oatmeal, and the  moonlight reflects off of the colored sugar so the reindeer can find your house.

I decided to make some more at home, so the boys could give it a try. It’s simple enough: Grab a couple of zip-top sandwich baggies. Let each child put a couple of handfuls of uncooked oatmeal in the baggie. Sprinkle in some sugar; we had red and green decorator sugar, so that’s what we used. Zip the bag closed, and you are ready to go.

Here’s a poem you can read while you sprinkle the food on the lawn:

Sprinkle on the lawn at night.

The moon will make it sparkle bright!

As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam

this will guide them to your home.

Cooper wanted to eat the reindeer food for a snack. I guess I’ll add red and green sugar to their oatmeal for breakfast and make some “Christmas oatmeal,” while I’m at it.
