April Fools’ Day came early to our house this year with a visit from Punxsutawney Phyllis. Phyllis, as you may recall, was on her world tour to promote her newest book, April Fool, Phyllis! Now the real April Fools’ Day (Sunday) has snuck up on me.
This year the boys are old enough to understand practical jokes and the purpose of the day. They love telling jokes and think just about anything is funny. It got me thinking, what sort of pranks could I play on them to celebrate the day? So, without further ado, here are a few ideas I’ve come up with thus far.
- Make a fake pillow mommy under the covers and wait for the unsuspecting boys to rush in and announce, “Time to wake up!”
- Dye their milk green and tell them it came from a green cow. (FamilyFun had a similar idea.)
- Declare it backwards day and let them wear their clothes backwards.
- Give them an apple…with a gummy worm climbing out of it.
- In the spirit of the Punxsutawney clan, create my own treasure hunt. I have to think carefully about the prize though. No maple candies for us with Easter and all that Easter candy right around the corner.
Do you have a favorite April Fools’ Day prank? I’d love to hear your ideas for injecting some fun into the day.
lol Kristen… I play little tricks on the kids too and my mom and sister… not sure what i’ll do this year… although I do like the idea of green milk lol
I’ll have to do some thinking …

Well, when you think of something good, let me know.
One we will never do again: the kids saran-wrapped the toilet seat ‘just for dad’, but Mom got ‘stuck’ ! Another time we ‘wall-papered’ the door/frame with large sheets of newspaper while dad was in the bathroom; good surprise, and he enjoyed breaking through it like a circus clown! Like your other ideas, esp. w/food coloring – anything in the lunchbox is game!
Great ideas Julie. Your saran wrap reminds me of my wedding night. Our friends broke into the bridal suite and saran wrapped the toilet among other things. That was a little messy. My husband takes long showers, so newspapering the bathroom might work,
All fun ideas! i wonder what your boys will think up in return 🙂
I told Cooper that April Fools’ Day was coming up, and I think he’s already brainstorming.
My dad was born on April Fools’ Day so I used to kid him about that and play a lot of jokes on him. 🙂
What fun, Robyn!
I have a good April fool prank (but I’m not telling what it is 😉 )
Ok, but tell us how it went on Monday.
Now you know why I couldn’t tell you 😉 I couldn’t give it away!
It was a good one! I already dyed the kids’ milk green, and we wallpapered the door to my bedroom with newspaper. We are waiting for “Daddy” to get up and be very surprised.
HA HA ! Good pranks!!
I love your April Fool’s ideas! It’s probably the one “holiday” I don’t go crazy for, or at least provide some kind of trinket to be found upon waking. Maybe I should decorate the house for Christmas?? That would be funny with Easter just around the corner. In the meantime, I’ve tagged you in the Lucky 7 MEME, so hop on over to my blog and see what it’s all about. Happy April Fool’s a little early.

You are brilliant at April Fool’s jokes! I must remember to do one this year. I think you should do the pillow one for sure. I’m going to go with backwards day. Thanks for the tip, I look forward to hearing how it turned out!
Catherine, practical joking is not something I normally do, but I thought it might be a fun way to ring in April. Let me know how backwards day goes.
I love the idea of “fake pillow Mommy!” I might have to try that one…
It should be pretty funny since they always bound into my room to wake me up. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Ha! I just work with the kids to play tricks on my husband. 😉
